Research work during the last 15 years with the aim of improving the treatment of at least two forms of the illness have led to a new type of treatment  in lymphology, i.e. the surgical lymphology.

Today it has become possible to successfully cure two types of the illness, i.e.the often non recognised lipedema and the secondary lymphoedema, by surgical intervention or to significantly reduce the complaints by the complex decompression method. Surgical lymphology is a special discipline of lymphology. It implies the correct diagnosis of the illness.

In few individual cases imaging methods are used to further clear up the lymphological disorder. The operations have to be carefully planed and must be carried out while carefully preserving the lymphatic vessels. A conservative follow-up treatment over a specific period of time is necessary in order to restore or improve the lymphatic backflow.
